My 3-year old Bichon-Shih Tsu, Abbie, is terrified of thunder! When she hears the thunder, Abbie immediately runs to jump into my lap with her heart beating so rapidly that it is frightening. Immediately I rush to get her outside before she potties on me or the floor.

I first sought out my veterinarian for help. He prescribed Trazadone (1/4 of a tablet) but this doesn’t start working quick enough and afterwards, Abbie would sleep for the entire day.

Next, I purchased a pricey Thunder Jacket. Once my husband, Joe, and I figured out how to put it on Abbie, it helped out somewhat.

Then my daughter, Michele, suggested that I use Peace and Calming, an essential oil blend made up of Tangerine, Orange, Ylang Ylang, Patchouli, and Blue Tansy, to help Abbie “weather the storm.” I used this blend in my diffuser as suggested, but it didn’t stop Abbie from shaking or having a rapid heartbeat.

After all my trials and errors, I’ve now learned what to do. After the first crash of thunder, I reach for my Peace and Calming. Abbie comes running and sits still while I rub one drop on her coat and around her face (not too close). And then just like that, Abbie becomes “Cool, Calm, and Collected” and handles the thunder like a pro!
